Spring Gobbler Adventure

Jennifer had hunted the Wild Rocking P for whitetail deer in the fall.  During that hunt, she saw turkey, blackbuck and of course, bagged a trophy whitetail during that adventure.  This spring she returned, wanting to harvest a long beard.  She arrived Sunday and we immediately set out for an afternoon hunt.  Jennifer brought her trusty Mossberg 835 loaded with Winchester #5 Double X.  She hiked in and made her set at a small hollow adjacent to one of the pecan groves and started calling.  A cagey Tom walked in, peeked in and around the trees but wouldn't come any closer.  After another hour she moved to another set, again calling in another timid Tom.  At sunset Jennifer and her guide walked back in making plans to meet at 5:30 the next morning.

She nestled in against a tree early the next morning waiting for the sun to rise.  The Toms started gobbling 15 minutes before sunrise.  At sunrise, Jennifer's guide started calling back, getting responses from two Toms deep in another pecan grove.  Suddenly a Tom boomed back just to her right, he had walked in quietly.  Her guide replied with low volume clucks, the old Tom walked right in and Jennifer made the perfect head shot.

The fully mature Tom weighed over 20 pounds and had a 10.5 inch beard with small well worn spurs.  As you can tell from the picture, he was magnificent and Jennifer insisted on carrying him out, just like she used to when hunting with her family in Pennsylvania.

Once back at the bunkhouse she called her father in Pennsylvania to share the story and some pictures.  Hunting is a passion that runs deep in her family's history.  The fact that she now lives states away doesn't diminish the opportunity to share the experience and continue a generational tradition.  Well done ma'am.
